Qotom Q350G4Y: My new router

Posted 19 January 2020 in learning, router, and technology

I recently got a Qotom Q350G4Y fanless mini PC. It's a cute little thing:

The vendor is located in China. I've found it difficult to find consistent information online so I figured it would be good to publish information about the one I received. Note that Qotom may substitute a slightly different CPU from one model to the next, so my CPU is a bit different than the CPU that is generally advertised:

Component Manufacturer Model Value
Main board Qotom Q4210YG4-P V1.0
CPU Intel Core i5-4210Y 1.50 GHz
Memory Kimtigo KT8GS3EDF 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
Storage Hoodisk HDSSESB-128GB 128GB SSD
Wi-Fi Atheros AR5BHB116 2.4/5GHz 802.11n
Ethernet Intel i211 4-port Gigabit Ethernet

My goal is to use this to replace my existing router and to learn about Linux and router functionality, including DHCP, DNS, firewalls, Wi-Fi hotspots, and VPN. My plan is to sequentially migrate each service from my current router to the Qotom PC (starting with DHCP) so I can take this is increments. This will be an exciting start to my learning in 2020!
