lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2007.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

Goodbye, Slashdot

Posted 23 March 2007 in slashdot

There is something about Slashdot that draws me back time and again. It's certainly not the news stories, which are sometimes so wildly inaccurately summarized that I can only assume that the "editors" are illiterate. Further, Slashdot's stories are typically two and three days behind everyone else.

No, what keeps me coming back is the community (and even this has suffered because of Slashdot's "editors"). I enjoy reading what people have to say about the stories, and Slashdot's users -- like Bruce Perens and AKAImBatman -- consistently say something worthwhile to read. However, since I'm really only wanting to read the comments, I have to actually visit Slashdot. I end up wasting a lot of time browsing the site, and it needs to stop.

I'm not going to visit Slashdot anymore.
