lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2006.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

A list of things

  • I've started organizing my photos again. I didn't realize I was so far behind, but I've got almost 150 imported photos that have yet to be tagged and captioned! Even when that's finished, I've still got many, many more from 2004 and before.

  • Foster House has a really nice pool table, but after seeing that one resident has returned from last year, I expect that the table - along with many other nice things - will be significantly damaged by the end of the year. Seriously, who else would mercilessly beat the couch with a pool cue repeatedly? I am of course referring to the same person who shattered a light bulb using a water gun last year.

  • It looks like I'm going to be taking a sequence of probability courses this year. It wasn't my first choice, but at least I can become an actuary if I want (which means a lot of risk management).

  • Spanish will probably fall through in favor of Portuguese; it turns out that I can meet my new 2-year language proficiency requirement in one year if I take an intensive Portuguese series. Plus, Portuguese and Spanish are related languages, so maybe I can take the quick and dirty route to becoming trilingual, eh?

  • I've been introducing people to Lock left and right. Pretty much everyone is getting it, but the group I was with last night convinced me to learn euchre and pinochle. I'll probably also learn poker so I can trounce Eric over Christmas break.

  • MySQL is some pretty straightforward stuff. I'm especially pleased to know about the benefits of prepared statements, which seems to immediately put me in the 90th percentile of MySQL programmers. A little more studying and I should be able to begin writing very basic user management and login code for the conversation software I intend to write.

  • I've been streamlining my workflow, which means emptying my personal inbox, creating email accounts for Northwestern and non-personal email, and whittling down my buddy list. On a related note, I'm also gearing up to close my Facebook and Myspace accounts.

  • Andy should be coming to visit next weekend, and Allan has booked a flight for the weekend after that. Fun!

  • Classes start Tuesday!
