lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2006.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

For the hearing-impaired

Posted 22 April 2006

I was recently at a restaurant which sported multiple TVs, one of which was tuned to a boxing match with closed captioning enabled. I just have to say that the quality of handicap-accessible television is abysmal.

For instance, when the boxing match would cut to commercial, the first ad would always have bizarre characters corrupting the screen. One commercial aired with flawless captioning, but incredibly, the last word of the jingle - "AutoZone!" - stayed on screen for the entirety of the next commercial.

I can only surmise that corporate America only mildly cares for those with disabilities; the technology is available, but it's underutilized at best.
