lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2005.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

Quick notes

Posted 15 October 2005

Here's some quick notes I wanted to mention before I shut down the site (again), this time to install Ubuntu.

  • Jesi has a great couple of blog entries she's been hacking out. It's in parts, so feel free to jump straight to part - 1 -, - 2 -, - 3 -, or - 4 - (I'm including the dashes to make the links easier to click. Smart, eh?).

  • Andy has his blog up and running again, and he's noted his first impressions of the latest Ubuntu release (he installed before me, primarily because he didn't have to backup everything first).

  • MySpace got totally rocked by a Javascript virus. Basically, this guy "samy" wanted more friends on MySpace, so he took advantage of flaws in Internet Explorer (surprise!) to silently make people's accounts request to be his friend. He topped out at over one million friend requests. The take-home message is to NEVER USE MYSPACE and to NEVER USE INTERNET EXPLORER. Duh.

  • Xanga had a similar incident a long while ago, except instead of forcing Xanga's servers to be shutdown, it was used to attack another website. Man, I hate Xanga.
