lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2005.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

I spent some time working on my laptop today. Oh, didn't I mention? I helped a girl by setting up her new laptop, and she gave me her old one. "It's not worth much; it stopped working this week." Well I installed Ubuntu, and when I rebooted the computer it completely locked up and I heard the dreaded Dell click of death over and over. As far as I know, all Dell laptop hard drives fail completely within 3 years. Don't ever purchase a Dell laptop.

The other day I picked up Limeaway for my bike. Oh, didn't I mention? A graduating senior offered me his bike on the cheap, so I purchased it. It's turquoise. You just can't understand the significance of that statement unless you see the bike, but trust me on this one -- it's turquoise with a vengeance.

I need to de-rust the bike (and replace the chain, and tighten up the brakes, and paint it not turquoise) and replace the Dell laptop hard drive, in addition to selling off a number of books I've accumulated and backing up everything on my main computer.

It seems to be a summer of projects!
