Kurt McKee

lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2005.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

I'm talking with Big Jeff, and it suddenly occurs to me that I need to tackle some homework so I can play frisbee later on.

Jeff : Don't lie to me, McKee. I already know how this is going to go. You say "I'm going to tackle that homework." You'll immediately head to your little Linux box and say "Oh, I think I'm going to admire my website, kurt mckee dot org, for a little bit." Probably get in a few IM conversations.
Jeff : Then you'll probably head down to Chipotle with Andy Collins. And I don't mean "probably". I mean "more than likely". I mean "most definitely". Then you'll say "Man, I have to start on that homework." You'll come back and make sure your blog has been updated...maybe apply a few security updates. Then back down to Chipotle. By then it's 10 o'clock. You'll say "I really need to start on that homework!"
Jeff : But you'll say "Hmm...I have an XBox under my bed...and there's a big screen TV downstairs...and plenty of people in the dorm who like to play Halo..." Then the Halo tournament will begin. Around 2 A.M. you'll say "Wait, wasn't there something I needed to...oh yeah."
Jeff : And then you'll stay up all night doing the homework, and show up just long enough to turn it in and then leave.
Me : Wow, that's pretty accurate. I need to quote you on that on my blog.
Jeff : Right on schedule, McKee.
