lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2005.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

The photo gallery is online!

I am pleased to announce a new addition to my website: a photo gallery!

I'm using a default theme for right now, so please bear with me. One of these days, probably when Gallery 2.0 and Wordpress 1.5 are completely stable, I will tackle the monumental task of making the two look similar and livelier, so there's some amount of visual continuity between my blog and my photo gallery.

I have nowhere near the number of photos, people, events, and memories up that I want to eventually have. When that day comes, though, I'll have another problem, one which I deal with when trying to organize and categorize emails, IMs, and the files on my hard drive. That problem basically comes down to this: how do I minimize both breadth and depth? I don't want you to have to click through subcategory after subcategory just to find actual photos (depth), and I don't want to have every single last possible category on the front page, because you'll soon get lost in the sheer number of categories (breadth). So that's a tricky issue of categorization that I'll have to one day deal with.

But that's a while down the road, so why don't you just go check it out?
