lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2005.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

Fumbling in my pockets for a change

Posted 28 January 2005

After a hard look at how I use my computer and my time, and what I'm putting in front of me all day long, I have decided to remove from my computer software, bookmarks, and aggregator feeds that consume my time and distract and seduce me from more important things. So, to that end, here is a list of the things that have been uninstalled and removed (and no, there will be no linking to other sites this time).

Software :
FreeCiv (Civilization II clone)
Gnome Games (I have had an obsession with Solitaire, Mines, and recently Mahjongg)
Jump 'n Bump (Simple, gory little game involving rabbits)
ScummVM (Allows me to play my classic LucasArts games)

Comics (bookmarks and feeds) :
Able and Baker
AppleGeeks
Genrezvous Point
MacHall
Megatokyo
Order of the Stick
Over the Hedge
Pearls Before Swine
Penny Arcade
User Friendly
VG Cats
White Ninja

And finally, I have also removed everything related to Slashdot. I realize that I will find other things to consume my time and infect my thoughts without a change of heart and mind. Similarly, I am reminded of a conversation back in Oklahoma with an underaged smoker. When I discovered she was a smoker, I suggested that she might consider giving up smoking. She offered some excuses like "I'll quit when I turn 18", but ultimately she rolled back her sleeve and revealed several scars. Turns out she used to cut herself, but she had supplanted that with smoking, and was now afraid that giving up that addiction would just make her vulnerable to some other, more dire addiction.

Permanent change will require more than a few bookmark deletions.
