lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2004.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

I must be insane...but it's FREE!

Posted 19 November 2004

I'm trying out an advertising program, where basically I complete an offer, refer some friends, and get something free in the mail. In this case, I'm shooting for a Samsung 17" LCD monitor (model 710n). I saw an article over at Wired stating that the company is legit. I'm certainly hoping so! I've seen a lot of people around the internet stating that they've gotten free iPods and such, so I figure "Meh! Might as well try it out!".

It turns out that the monitor has a much higher number of referals required than an iPod. Where in the iPod offer I would need to coerce three friends to complete advertiser offers themselves, the LCD carries a hefty eight-friend burden. That's OK. Surely I have eight friends that want to try such things as

  • Rent movies online from Blockbuster

  • Download songs from RealRhapsody

  • Try the Wall Street Journal for 8 weeks

  • Have a go with Columbia House DVD

  • Get a credit card

This of course is ignoring the fact that if they do so, they too have the opportunity to get a free ! I'm of course rooting for everyone to at least check out the site. Remember that if you sign up and the site doesn't say "You are currently being referred by y2p3@yahoo.com " your participation won't get counted towards me getting an LCD monitor! So please,

Sign up and help me get an LCD monitor!
