lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2004.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

Andy, you're going down. Again.

Andy Collins and Justin Pawela give me an hard time about Linux way too often. Here's the more memorable quotes thus far.

About one week after installing Linux on Justin's computer
Justin : I've been trying this Linux thing for a while, and I think I'm going to have to just go back to Windows.
Andy : Well yeah. Everyone knows that Linux is useless on the desktop. It'll never be anything except a server operating system.
Me : thinking about how great my past 5 years with Linux as my desktop operating system have been
Andy : You know how I told you that I run Slackware Linux? I lied. It's really a beta of Windows Longhorn. Bill Gates gave it to m... starts laughing OK, I couldn't keep a straight face saying that.

Days after the ancient data server at Andy's work got hacked and they had to rebuild the machine
Andy : I couldn't believe how easily Slackware got installed on the server! Everything works! That's not supposed to happen. You're supposed to suffer when you use Linux!
Justin : Are you sure it's Linux?
Andy : Well I actually installed Windows XP and I've been lying to everyone at work.
Justin : laughing YEEEES. So you know it's got a beautiful, beautiful interface.
