lessons learned in production

Hey there! This article was written in 2004.

It might not have aged well for any number of reasons, so keep that in mind when reading (or clicking outgoing links!).

Tough decision...

Situation: sitting at lunch with Justin Pawela, having told him that I have a four-hour meeting to attend after lunch.

Justin : So...do you want to skip your meeting to play Halo?
Me : WHAT?!
Justin : You could just show up an hour late. You know, with a newspaper under your arm, a cup of coffee in your hand, and you're talking on your cell phone. Everybody'll look at you, and you'll motion to them that it's cool, and just keep talking. And when you're done, you sit down, kick back, and say "Did I miss anything?"
Me : Maybe I should have on bunnie slippers? Be in my bath robe maybe?
Justin : No, see, that just says "Fire me." But if you do it right you'll be Upper Management by the end of the day. You'll have your boss' job. Like in Office Space when he says "In a given week I probably only do 15 minutes of real, actual work," and he gets promoted.
